The 19th edition of the World Athletics Championships held in Budapest, Hungary, proved to be a lucrative stage for Kenyan athletes, allowing them to substantially bolster their financial portfolios.
Amidst the thrill of competition, the Kenyan contingent secured an impressive tally of 10 medals—3 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze—translating into substantial financial gains for the accomplished sportsmen and women.
Faith Kipyegon, standing out as a singular force, triumphed in both the 1500m and 5000m finals, securing dual gold medals. Each triumph added a substantial sum of $70,000 to her coffers, culminating in a remarkable $140,000 (Ksh 20,356,000) earnings for her two gold achievements.
Mary Moraa, distinguishing herself as another golden sensation, emerged victorious in the women’s 800m final.

This success endowed the ‘dancing queen’ with $70,000 (Ksh 10,178,000) for her first-place finish, overcoming a field of accomplished competitors, including the USA’s Olympic champion Athing Mu.
In the silver medal category, Emmanuel Wanyonyi secured second place in the men’s 800m, while Daniel Simiyu Ebenyo clinched the first runner-up position in the 10,000m event.
Beatrice Chepkoech captured a silver medal in the women’s 3000m steeplechase. Each silver medalist pocketed a commendable $35,000 (Ksh 5,089,000).
The ranks of bronze medalists included Faith Cherotich (3000m steeplechase), Beatrice Chebet (5000m), Jacob Krop (5000m), and Abraham Kibiwott (3000m steeplechase).
These athletes secured their spots on the podium and earned $22,000 each. This achievement translated to an approximate balance increment of Ksh 3,198,800.

Notably, Ferdinand Omanyala, a Kenyan sprint sensation, demonstrated remarkable resilience in the 100m final, securing the seventh position.
His spirited performance earned him not just admiration from millions but also a monetary reward of $6,000 (Ksh 872,400).
Omanyala’s journey to the 100m final marked a historic milestone as the first Kenyan to compete at this level.
The triumphant Kenyan athletes are anticipated to be treated to a celebratory luncheon hosted by the state, where further awards are slated to honor their achievements.
