In a disturbing incident, al-Shabaab militants launched an attack in the Widhu area of Lamu County, resulting in the tragic death of at least one person and the torching of several houses. The attack occurred on Tuesday night when an unknown number of gunmen struck, catching the community by surprise.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the gang set houses ablaze during the raid before making their escape. As of now, no arrests have been made, but multi-agency teams are actively pursuing the attackers, according to official reports.

The attack has had a significant impact on the local population, with many people being displaced from their homes. Authorities are working diligently to provide support and efforts are underway to resettle those affected.

This incident is the latest in a series of security challenges faced by the region, which has seen an increase in operations to combat the threat of terrorism. The proximity of the area to the main Kenya-Somalia border has made it susceptible to such attacks.

Near the Kenya-Somalia border, there has been a string of terrorist incidents, prompting the state to impose a dusk-to-dawn curfew in areas including Salama, Juhudi, Widhu Marafa, Mashogoni, and Ukumbi in Lamu West. These measures are part of a broader effort to enhance operations targeting terrorists who often seek refuge in the Boni Forest.

These militants have consistently attacked areas near the Kenyan border, utilizing firearms and explosives, resulting in numerous casualties and injuries. Security forces remain committed to addressing this threat and ensuring the safety and security of the affected regions.
