Kenya is set to invest Sh1 billion in the implementation of the new third-generation digital IDs, named the Maisha Card, announced Julius Bitok, the Permanent Secretary of the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services.
Distinguishing it from the previous Huduma Namba program, Bitok stated that the Maisha Card would utilize the existing biometric database, eliminating the need for additional biometrics from Kenyan citizens.
This initiative, introduced by the Kenya Kwanza administration, aims to provide a unique and easily verifiable digital identifier for citizens and residents, enhancing service delivery and promoting financial inclusion.
The Maisha Card will have various applications, including serving as a school admission number, exam index number, ID upon reaching 18 years, and registration numbers for NHIF, NSSF, and driving licenses.
The rollout is expected to span two to three years, with an estimated issuance of three to four million cards annually.
Those replacing lost or damaged IDs will be issued Maisha Cards instead of second-generation cards.
