Former Mungiki leader, Maina Njenga, has been charged with possession of weapons, including rungus, in a court appearance at the Madaraka Law Courts on Monday.

However, he has been granted temporary release on a cash bail of Sh100,000.

During his pre-trial proceedings, Njenga asserted that he believes the police were responsible for his alleged abduction while masked.

He strongly condemned the purported abduction, stating that the government’s duty is to protect its citizens rather than engage in attacks and torture against them.

Njenga further claimed that his alleged abduction was linked to his involvement in Mount Kenya politics.

In an earlier account, Njenga disclosed that he had been released on Sunday evening after being transported to the Banana estate. He reported that one of his captors had given him Sh2,000 to facilitate his journey home.

Njenga was reportedly abducted by unidentified individuals late on Saturday night. According to his attorney, Ndegwa Njiru, the incident took place at approximately 11:10 pm in the Ndederu area of Kiambu County.

Njiru explained that Njenga’s vehicle was obstructed by another vehicle bearing a Sudanese license plate. He and his assistant, Felix Lakishe, were forcibly removed from their car and placed into the Sudanese-plated vehicle, which then sped away.

Remarkably, the abductors failed to identify themselves or provide any explanation for their actions during the incident.

Njiru also expressed his concerns, saying, “We are due to appear in Makadara Court tomorrow for a hearing related to a weapons case. We are perplexed as to why he is being abducted. It seems they are searching for a pretext to detain him if he fails to appear in court.”

It is worth noting that Njenga had previously been apprehended on July 19, 2023.

During that arrest, he, his aide, and his brother were allegedly found in possession of a significant cache of weapons, including 14 machetes, 24 Maasai swords, 46 rungus, and three jembe sticks. Njenga subsequently appeared before the Makadara Law Courts on July 25 and was granted bail of Ksh.100,000.
