Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, has been released from a US prison after serving almost two years for her involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering, as confirmed by a prison official on Wednesday.
In November 2021, Coronel received a three-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to charges linked to her husband’s sprawling narcotics empire.
Her punishment also entailed four years of supervised release and the forfeiture of up to $1.5 million.
Randilee Giamusso, a spokesperson, conveyed this information to CNN via email, stating, “We can confirm Emma Coronel Aispuro was released from the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) today, September 13, 2023.”
“For privacy, safety, and security, the FBOP does not provide additional information on those who are no longer in our custody,” she also added.
Coronel had been held at a residential reentry management facility in Long Beach, California, as indicated by the prison bureau’s inmate locator.
During her sentencing, Coronel, who holds dual US-Mexican citizenship, expressed profound remorse for her association with Guzman and the Sinaloa Cartel, recognizing the harm it may have inflicted.
In contrast, Guzman, a notorious figure known for escaping from Mexican prisons twice, is serving a life sentence at Colorado’s Supermax prison.
Guzman was convicted in 2019 on charges of orchestrating a criminal enterprise, drug trafficking, and firearms violations. Prosecutors characterized him as a “ruthless and bloodthirsty leader” of the Sinaloa cartel.
The Sinaloa cartel, which remains active, faces sanctions from the Biden administration in February. This action was taken due to the cartel’s involvement in the illicit and deadly trade of fentanyl and methamphetamine, according to US officials.
