In preparation for the Africa Climate Summit 2023 set to be held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) from September 4 to September 6, several roads in Nairobi will be temporarily closed, affecting city motorists.
The summit, expected to draw Heads of State and thousands of dignitaries, seeks to promote a climate-compatible vision for Africa. Under the theme “Driving Green Growth and Climate Finance Solutions for Africa and the World,” the event aims to address critical climate issues on the continent.
Nairobi County Police Commander, Adamson Bungei, announced that certain roads have been designated as “red zones” to ensure the smooth proceedings of the summit. While acknowledging that these changes may disrupt normal city operations, they are necessary to accommodate the summit’s activities.
Among the roads to be temporarily inaccessible to motorists are Harambee Avenue, Taifa Road (including Reinsurance Plaza), the sunken parking area, City Hall Way, Parliament Road, Intercontinental Hotel vicinity, and the Holy Family Basilica.
Additionally, Matumbo, Pension, Haille Selassie, and Parliament Lanes will be closed, with no access permitted from Wabera Street to City Hall Way.
However, alternative routes have been provided for motorists wishing to access the Central Business District (CBD). Vehicles heading from Thika Road towards Waiyaki Way and Nakuru will be directed to use the Eastern Bypass or Wangari Maathai Road.
Conversely, those bound for Mombasa Road from Thika Road should opt for the Eastern By-Pass or Outering Road. Vehicles approaching Waiyaki Way from Nakuru can use Mombasa Road or the Southern By-Pass.
Westlands-bound vehicles are advised to utilize University Way towards the Globe Roundabout for CBD access, while those coming from Ngong Road should enter the CBD through Haille Selassie Avenue.
For vehicles from Mombasa and Lang’ata Roads, Lusaka Road via Landhies Road or Haille Sellassie Avenue is the recommended route to reach the CBD, as they navigate the temporary road closures during the Africa Climate Summit 2023.
