During the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Kirinyaga branch of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut), the union’s Secretary General, Collins Oyuu, delivered a resounding warning to teachers involved in the sexual abuse of students within their schools.
Oyuu made it clear that Knut would not offer any defense to teachers found guilty of such reprehensible acts. He asserted the union’s full support for the dismissal of individuals engaging in sexual misconduct with students, emphasizing that they should face legal consequences rather than continue teaching.
Addressing the gathering, Oyuu called upon Knut branch officials and executive members to exercise heightened vigilance and take decisive action against teachers who violate the rights of the children entrusted to their care.
In addition to addressing the issue of sexual abuse, Oyuu turned his attention to the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) and issued a warning regarding the timely payment of allowances to exam invigilators and supervisors set to be deployed during the upcoming national examinations.
Oyuu expressed concern that past delays in releasing these allowances had inconvenienced teachers, and he firmly stated that Knut would consider resorting to industrial action if KNEC failed to promptly disburse the allowances to all examiners.
He called on Knec to proactively make arrangements to ensure that examiners would not have to endure protracted waiting periods for their rightful compensation after completing their duties during the examinations.
