An American hiker who has been missing since August, was discovered deceased on a rugged peak in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Surprisingly his dog, a Jack Russell terrier, named Finny, managed to survive and remained faithfully by his owner’s side for over two months.
Rich Moore, 71, from Pagosa Springs, Colorado, had embarked on a hike up the 12,500-foot mountain on August 19 but never returned home, as reported by Fox News.
Despite extensive efforts by search-and-rescue crews, including helicopter drops and thorough searches near the peak and trailhead, Moore could not be located. Over 2,000 hours were dedicated to the search.
However, around two weeks ago on October 30, a hunter discovered Moore’s body more than two miles east of the summit, accompanied by his loyal Jack Russell terrier, Finny. The dog had somehow survived the challenging wilderness conditions and steadfastly stayed with his deceased owner.
Taos Search and Rescue shared the discovery in a Facebook post, stating, “On October 30th, the body of missing hiker 71-year-old Rich Moore of Pagosa Springs was found, along with his dog, who was found alive and with his body.”
Social media was flooded with condolences for Moore’s family and admiration for Finny’s loyalty, with many referring to the Jack Russell as a “hero.”
While expressing sadness over Moore’s passing, one person on Facebook noted, “So sorry this man died but I am glad that his dog was there by his side all the time. And I am glad that the dog did survive. Humans do not deserve dogs. This loyal companion stayed with his best friend until they took him and his best friend away.”
The remarkable survival of the Jack Russell was highlighted, with some suggesting that Finny likely relied on instinctive hunting skills to sustain himself while staying close to Moore.
“There is no love like the unconditional love of dogs. Such faithfulness,” commented another individual.
Although investigators have not determined the cause of Moore’s death, they currently do not suspect foul play. Moore’s remains were recovered from the mountain on Halloween.
