Angry residents of Gaturo village in Muranga on Saturday evening lynched a man who had quarelled with his mother over a plate of food before beheading her.
According to the police, Patrick Irungu who is a known substance and drug abuser had returned home demanding to be served ugali by his mother Magdalene Wangechi.
However, his mother had prepared bananas instead, leading to a heated quarrel between the two. Matters quickly escalated when Irungu, fueled by anger, reportedly beheaded his mother using a machete.
Neighbors, alerted by Wangechi’s screams, rushed to the scene only to find her lifeless body in a pool of blood.
Irungu, realizing the severity of his actions, attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by residents in a nearby thicket. In a shocking turn of events, the enraged mob took justice into their own hands, lynching Irungu before authorities could intervene.
Witnesses at the scene claimed that Irungu was under the influence of substances during the attack, shedding light on the devastating consequences of substance abuse on both individuals and their families.
Murang’a South Deputy County Commissioner, Gitonga Murungi, officially confirmed the incident while strongly condemning the act of mob justice. He issued a stern warning to the public against taking the law into their own hands and emphasized the need for adherence to legal and orderly processes.
As investigations into the tragic incident unfold, authorities have moved the bodies of both Irungu and Wangechi to Murang’a County Funeral Home.
