Safina Namukwaya, a 70-year-old Ugandan woman, has defied the odds and become a mother to twins after undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment.
Namukwaya’s babies, a boy and a girl, were born on Wednesday, November 29, at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Uganda.
“Namukwaya delivered her babies today at 12:04pm. Mother and babies are all well,” the hospital announced on social media.
Namukwaya’s successful pregnancy and childbirth are a testament to the advancements in IVF technology and the resilience of the human body.
Her story is an inspiration to women who may have thought that their chances of having children were over.
The hospital celebrated Namukwaya’s achievement, calling her their “epitome of success” and inviting others to join them in celebrating this extraordinary woman.
Namukwaya’s story is also a reminder that menopause, which typically occurs between the ages of 44 and 58, does not necessarily mean the end of a woman’s reproductive journey.
With the help of modern medical technology, women like Namukwaya can still experience the joys of motherhood later in life.
Namukwaya’s case is a rare one, but it is not the first time a woman has given birth at an advanced age.
In 2019, Erramatti Mangamma from Hyderabad, India, became the oldest living mother at the age of 73 after giving birth to twin baby girls through IVF.
