At least 116 people were killed and over 400 injured when a devastating earthquake struck northwest China early Tuesday morning, collapsing buildings and triggering chaos in freezing temperatures. The temblor, which hit Gansu province near the border with Qinghai, measured 5.9 on the Richter scale according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), though Chinese state media reported a slightly higher magnitude of 6.2.
The worst-hit areas in Gansu and the neighboring Qinghai province witnessed scenes of utter devastation. Homes crumbled, roads cracked, and debris littered the streets as terrified residents fled into the biting cold.
Casualties mounted rapidly with at least 105 lives lost in Gansu and 11 in Qinghai. Hundreds more were injured, some critically, prompting a massive emergency response. Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered “all-out efforts” in search and rescue operations, emphasizing the need for caution due to the frigid conditions and potential for aftershocks.
Freezing temperatures below freezing added another layer of urgency to the rescue efforts. Rescuers battled the elements as they raced against time to pull survivors from under the rubble and provide medical assistance to the injured. Images from state media showed dedicated teams working tirelessly under floodlights, while makeshift shelters and relief supplies were rushed to the disaster zone.
The quake’s epicenter, located roughly 100 kilometers southwest of Gansu’s capital Lanzhou, sent tremors as far as the major city of Xi’an in Shaanxi province, nearly 600 kilometers away. Several smaller aftershocks followed, raising concerns about potential further damage and casualties.
China is no stranger to seismic activity. This latest earthquake comes on the heels of a 5.4-magnitude temblor in eastern China in August and a 6.6-magnitude quake in Sichuan province last September. The most devastating recent earthquake occurred in 2008, when a 7.9-magnitude tremor in Sichuan claimed over 87,000 lives.
The human cost of this latest tragedy is still unfolding as rescue efforts continue. The international community has expressed condolences and offered assistance, highlighting the global solidarity in the face of such disasters.
