The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has warned Kenyans about a falsified batch of Postinor-2 emergency contraceptive tablets circulating in the country.
The regulator identified the affected batch as T34197R, labelled as Postinor-2 Levonorgestrel 0.75mg.
According to the PPB, the falsified tablets may contain incorrect quantities of the active ingredient, no active ingredient at all, harmful contaminants or undeclared substances. As a result, the medicines may fail to provide the intended contraceptive effect and could potentially pose health risks.
The board has urged pharmacies, hospitals and members of the public to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of Postinor-2 before purchasing or using the medicine.
Kenyans have also been advised to purchase medicines only from PPB-licensed pharmacies and suppliers and to avoid products from unverified sources.
Two people have been arrested in connection with the circulation of the falsified products as investigations continue.
The warning comes as health authorities step up efforts to curb the distribution of counterfeit and falsified medicines in the Kenyan market.
