Kenyan Catholic bishops say Pope did not allow same sex marriages

The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has issued clarification regarding Pope Francis’s recent remarks on the blessing of same-sex couples.

According to KCCB Chairman Rev. Martin Kivuva Musonde, the Pope did not permit priests to liturgically bless same-sex couples, nor did he endorse such unions.

Rev. Musonde explained that the Pope’s directive was to extend a welcome to individuals in same-sex unions within the church, with the hope that through this inclusion, they may undergo a transformation leading to salvation.

He emphasized that the purpose of the document is to invite all people to God’s grace, encouraging them to embark on a path of conversion and salvation.

Addressing concerns about potential changes in the Catholic Church’s stance on marriage, Musonde stated that the Holy Father consistently urges priests to maintain open hearts, fostering a church environment where everyone, regardless of their moral status, feels welcome.

Musonde clarified that the Pope’s letter expands the scope of church blessings to include “simple blessings” outside a liturgical setting. This encompasses blessings for individuals, regardless of their moral or faith condition, as long as they seek the blessing with sincerity and faith.

He highlighted that the document upholds the traditional doctrine of the Church regarding marriage, defining it as an indissoluble union between a man and a woman for life. The declaration, according to Musonde, does not alter this understanding and does not permit any liturgical rite or blessing that might cause confusion.

The Church, he affirmed, cannot bestow its liturgical blessings on relationships considered morally objectionable.
