The PlayStation 5 has achieved a significant milestone by officially reaching 50 million sales, as confirmed by Sony in a blog post.
This accomplishment is noteworthy, given the numerous supply chain challenges that limited the availability of PS5 units after its launch in November 2020.
Impressively, the PS5 reached the 50 million sales mark just slightly later than its predecessor, the PlayStation 4, which did not face as many supply chain obstacles or a global pandemic.
According to data from Ampere Analysis reported by the Financial Times, Sony has outsold the Xbox Series X and S by nearly three to one this year.
While Microsoft does not disclose official Xbox sales numbers, estimates from Ampere suggest that Microsoft sold approximately 7.6 million next-gen systems in the current year, marking a 15 percent decline from 2022. In contrast, Sony experienced a surge in sales, with a 65 percent increase to reach 22.5 million units sold.
The popularity of the PS5 can be attributed to Sony’s release of compelling and highly anticipated games in this generation, including recent hits like Spider-Man 2 and upcoming sequels such as God of War Ragnarok.
In comparison, Microsoft has faced challenges with some of its major releases, including Halo Infinite and Redfall. The disparity in game offerings has likely contributed to the higher demand for the PS5.
