Chief Justice Martha Koome has been named a joint-winner in the African Female Leader category of the African Leadership Magazine (ALM) Persons of the Year 2023 Awards.

The announcement by the African Leadership Organisation (UK) Limited, the publishers of ALM, came after a two-step selection process that involved nominations and an online voting poll.

The Judiciary’s statement revealed that Chief Justice Koome’s recognition was primarily based on the online poll results, which garnered votes from across Africa and the globe.

The African Persons of the Year Awards are prestigious, vote-based leadership endorsement polls reserved for individuals contributing significantly to Africa’s progress, reshaping the continent’s image positively, and inspiring a generation of African achievers.

The board acknowledged Chief Justice Koome’s trailblazing leadership as Kenya’s first female Chief Justice and her accomplishments within the Judiciary. Her efforts in improving access to justice, promoting gender equality, and advancing judicial reforms to strengthen the rule of law in Kenya were highlighted.

Chief Justice Koome is set to be formally decorated with the instruments of honor during the 12th African Persons of the Year Awards Ceremony in 2024. The ceremony is scheduled for February 22–23, 2024, at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with the theme “Building Resilient African Economies.”

The event, a flagship annual initiative of the African Leadership Magazine, has convened leaders from various sectors over the past 12 years, providing a platform for discussions on Africa’s socio-economic growth and development.

It also honors outstanding African leaders who contribute to the continent’s development in various fields. Past winners include notable figures such as Mo Ibrahim, Atiku Abubakar, Jakaya Kikwete, Goodluck Jonathan, and others who have made significant contributions to Africa’s advancement.
