Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has announced that he will be departing the club at the end of the current Premier League season, marking the end of his nine-year tenure.
The 56-year-old, who guided the Reds to Champions League triumph in 2019 and secured their first Premier League title a year later, expressed his deep affection for the club, city, supporters, team, and staff in a statement on the official club website.
“I can understand that it’s a shock for a lot of people in this moment when you hear it for the first time, but obviously I can explain it — or at least try to explain it,” Klopp stated.
He conveyed his profound love for every aspect of Liverpool but emphasized that his choice to step down is rooted in the conviction that it is the right decision.
Klopp elaborated on his decision, citing a sense of running out of energy and the awareness that he cannot sustain the managerial role repeatedly. Despite having known about the decision for an extended period, he assured that he is in good spirits.
“After the years we had together and after all the time we spent together and after all the things we went through together, the respect grew for you, the love grew for you and the least I owe you is the truth — and that is the truth,” Klopp affirmed.
The departure of Klopp will also see assistant managers Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, along with development coach Vitor Matos, leave the club. Lijnders is reportedly eager to pursue a managerial role himself.
Klopp had signed a two-year contract extension in 2022, which would have kept him at Anfield until 2026. He will continue to lead Liverpool for the remainder of the 2023-24 season as they aim to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League crown.
