Samburu Governor Lati Leleit officially commenced the distribution of 109 camels to residents of Waso ward yesterday in a ceremony held at Archers Post.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including area senator Steve Lelegwe, woman representative Pauline Lenguris, and various members of the county assembly.
This initiative is part of an ongoing camel distribution program aimed at assisting 900 families across different wards in the county who have been adversely affected by drought.
This distribution follows closely on the heels of another event held just a day ago, where 88 camels of the Somali breed were provided to residents of Ngilai village in Wamba North ward.
Governor Leleit emphasized the resilience of the chosen camel breed to drought conditions, highlighting its potential to empower families residing in lowland regions.
Before the distribution, the camels underwent thorough inspection, branding, and treatment by county veterinary officers to ensure their health and well-being.
Governor Leleit took the opportunity to encourage the recipients not to sell the camels, emphasizing that they are intended to be a sustainable resource for the families, contributing to their economic stability.
This effort aligns with previous initiatives, such as the provision of 165 Sahiwal heifers to farmers in Suguta valley just three weeks ago. The comprehensive approach aims to address the challenges faced by communities in the region and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
