The Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) has confirmed that Rigobert Song will no longer continue as the men’s national team manager, Africanews reports.
Fecafoot announced the decision on Song’s departure on Wednesday afternoon, with a statement confirming that his backroom staff would also not see their contracts renewed.
Song’s contract with Cameroon expired on Wednesday. Fecafoot confirmed that details of the recruitment process for the next manager would be announced in the coming days.
Samuel Eto’o, president of Fecafoot, said in an interview with France24 that after talks with Song, the decision was made to not renew his deal.
He has brought a lot to this team. We have not achieved our objectives, and our executive committee and I do not see ourselves renewing the contract,” Eto’o said.
“I had the opportunity to discuss it with him. I gave our positions and now we have to think about the future while wishing him every success in his future career.”
Song, 47, first took charge of Cameroon in 2022 and recently led them to the last 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), eventually being knocked out of the competition by eventual finalists Nigeria.
Song, who played for Liverpool and West Ham United, made 137 appearances for Cameroon, winning AFCON in 2000 and 2002 alongside Eto’o.
Following his retirement in 2010, Song managed Cameroon’s Under-23s from 2018 to 2022, before succeeding Toni Conceicao as the men’s national team manager.
