Two suspects have been apprehended by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) in connection with sim swap fraud and robbery across three counties.
Following a detailed investigation, authorities apprehended the suspects in a village in Bomet, where they had established a base for their illicit activities.
The DCI, in a statement released on Wednesday, February 14, announced the breakthrough in their ongoing operation to dismantle the criminal syndicate responsible for causing distress among residents of Bomet, Kericho, and Nakuru Counties.
The suspects, identified as Kevin Kiplangat, also known as Elvis, aged 31, and Evan Kiprotich Chirchir, known as Protio, aged 22, were apprehended in the Mulot and Chepalungu areas of Bomet, respectively.
Residents’ complaints across the three counties prompted the collaboration between detectives and victims, leading to the successful tracking down of the suspects in Bomet.
Authorities have revealed that the duo are associated with a larger criminal network under the DCI’s surveillance, with several members facing pending court cases.
The ongoing operation, spearheaded by detectives from DCI Headquarters, aims to address numerous complaints of sim swap fraud perpetrated by the gang members, many of whom are already entangled in legal proceedings nationwide.
The two suspects have been detained at Litein Police Station pending an identification parade and subsequent arraignment in Kericho Law Courts for their alleged involvement in a violent robbery reported at the station on December 29, 2023.
Following the proceedings related to the robbery charge, the suspects will be further processed by other stations where electronic fraud cases implicating them have been reported.
