Gunmen carried out a raid on a village in Kainuk, Turkana County, resulting in the fatal shooting of two individuals during an unsuccessful robbery attempt.
This incident marks the latest in a series of deadly raids in the region, despite ongoing security operations.
According to the police, the raid occurred on the evening of Monday, February 5, in the Kakong sublocation Nakwarimor area, where a gang attempted to steal livestock from herders.
Residents alerted the police upon noticing the gunmen, leading to a shootout. A joint security team responded, engaging in an exchange of fire and successfully repelling the bandits through a local conservancy.
During subsequent investigations, the police discovered the body of a rider near the scene, with a bullet wound to the head. Another man, who was with his family burning firewood in the area, was also killed by the gang. Fortunately, the other family members were spared, according to the police.
The bodies were transported to the Lodwar County Referral Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
Although no livestock were stolen during the incident, the police announced the initiation of a significant operation to apprehend the gang.
The region has been consistently targeted by gunmen focused on livestock, with up to 20 people reported killed in separate attacks in January alone, as per police statements.
These incidents have created tension and fear among the locals, leading some to flee the area. Despite the imposition of a curfew, gunmen continue to defy the restrictions and carry out attacks for livestock.
Officials express concern over the apparent boldness and readiness for confrontation displayed by the gunmen in the face of ongoing operations.
