Kenyan athlete Charles Kipsang Kipkorir died on Saturday, February 24th, after collapsing at the finish line of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope in Cameroon.
The 33-year-old marathoner was reportedly leading the race when he began experiencing difficulties near the end. He crossed the finish line in 16th place but then collapsed, with doctors suspecting he suffered a heart attack.
Medics rushed Kipkorir to Buea Regional Hospital, but he was sadly pronounced dead.
“We cannot say exactly what happened,” said Cameroonian Governor Bernard Okalai Bilia. “We might believe that it is something like a heart attack.”
Kipkorir was a prominent figure in the race, being the first foreign athlete to register for the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope, Africa’s oldest international athletic competition.
His death has cast a shadow over the event and sent shockwaves through the Kenyan sporting community.
