The Cabinet Secretary for Interior, Kindiki Kithure, has officially established new administrative units in 31 counties as part of the government’s initiative to enhance the coordination of public services.
The proposed locations and sub-locations nationwide underwent a rigorous scrutiny process to ensure compliance with the specified criteria before being gazetted.
In June 2022, the government temporarily halted the creation of new sub-locations, locations, divisions, and sub-counties as part of service delivery units and land adjudications along county boundaries. This suspension was implemented until after the August general elections.
At the time, the then Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i, voiced concern about the politicization of boundary issues. This move aimed to address the challenges posed by cross-border conflicts in several counties, particularly disputes related to boundaries and access to vital resources such as land, pasture, and water.
