KRA Chairman Anthony Mwaura and former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko have been acquitted in a Sh 357 million corruption case due to a lack of evidence.
Mwaura and Sonko, along with 14 others who were also charged, have been released as the prosecution failed to present evidence linking them to the alleged corruption.
The charges date back to 2019, accusing them of embezzling Sh357 million from the Nairobi City County. The trial magistrate, Eunice Nyuttu, stated that the prosecution was unable to provide sufficient evidence to support the corruption charges against the accused individuals.
The corruption charges were related to the procurement of county motor vehicles and other materials during Sonko’s tenure as the Governor.
The court emphasized that the prosecution mishandled the case by presenting only six witnesses instead of the originally indicated 38 witnesses who were supposed to testify against the accused.
All 17 individuals faced a total of 19 graft charges, including a common charge of conspiring to corruptly embezzle public funds totaling Ksh.357,390,299.95 from the Nairobi City County Government between May 24, 2018, and March 28, 2019.
The court highlighted the absence of evidence to substantiate the alleged offenses, leading to the acquittal of all the accused persons.
