In what is to be a major step in the medical sector, Kenyatta University Teaching, Research, and Referral Hospital has announced that it has started reconstruction surgery for breast cancer survivors.
Treatment of cancer sometimes involves cutting off the whole breast (mastectomy) which may cause a person to feel conscious of their appearance. Breast reconstruction surgery therefore can mark a significant step in their journey towards recovery.
Addressing an international symposium attended by doctors and medical experts at the hospital, the Board Chairperson, Prof Olive Mugenda, announced that the hospital will perform reconstruction surgery for at least 10 women, commencing this week.
Mugenda further emphasized the importance of government and medical insurance companies’ support in financing this initiative.
Mugenda highlighted that breast reconstruction surgery is not merely a cosmetic procedure but a vital aspect of the recovery process. It plays a crucial role in helping survivors regain their confidence and improve their quality of life post-treatment.
Providing insights into the hospital’s cancer screening efforts, Mugenda revealed that since 2020, they have screened a staggering 82,000 cases of cancer. Among these, 2,500 were breast cancer patients at stages 3 and 4.
She emphasized the challenges faced by many women post-surgery, citing a lack of knowledge and resources. As one of the leading cancer treatment and management facilities in the country, the hospital is committed to assisting these women in reclaiming their lives through breast reconstruction procedures.
Mugenda outlined the collaborative efforts with medical experts from various countries, including Canada, the US, Argentina, Italy, and Ghana, in conducting these surgeries, highlighting the hospital’s commitment to providing world-class care to its patients.
