A 63-year-old passenger aboard a Lufthansa flight from Thailand to Germany tragically passed away on Thursday after experiencing a harrowing medical emergency mid-flight.
According to reports from the New York Post, the German man, whose identity has not been disclosed, succumbed to his condition in front of his wife while en route to Munich shortly before midnight.
Eyewitnesses described the distressing scene, recounting how the man exhibited visible signs of illness, including “cold sweats” and rapid breathing, as he boarded the plane in Bangkok.
Karin Missfelder, a fellow passenger, shared her shock, recalling the frantic efforts of passengers to assist the ailing man, who was later observed to be bleeding profusely from his mouth and nose.
Despite the swift response and attempts at CPR by flight attendants, it became evident that the man’s condition was critical, leading to a solemn acknowledgment of his passing by the flight’s captain.
The ordeal left passengers shaken, with Missfelder expressing regret over not intervening further, despite the presence of a doctor attending to the stricken passenger. She described the somber atmosphere onboard as the flight redirected back to Thailand, where the man’s body was moved to a designated area of the aircraft.
Adding to the distress, Missfelder highlighted the plight of the deceased’s wife, who was left to navigate customs procedures alone upon arrival. Reflecting on the ordeal, she emphasized the need for greater support and assistance for affected passengers during such challenging circumstances.
In response to inquiries, a Lufthansa spokesperson confirmed the incident, expressing condolences to the family of the deceased and regret for any inconvenience caused to passengers. The flight’s data revealed its return to Bangkok, with passengers reporting a subsequent delay before being rerouted to Germany via Hong Kong.
