The Nairobi City County administration has taken decisive action to address the buildup of sludge in General Waruingi, Eastleigh, which had been extracted from nearby drainage systems.
Residents had voiced concerns over the challenges they faced in having the muck removed, with some alleging demands for bribes from authorities. Responding to these issues, City Hall officials dispatched a wheeled excavator to the area on Friday to tackle the sludge problem.
This intervention aims to ensure the cleanliness and safety of the street, which hosts various hotels, restaurants, banks, and other businesses. The deteriorating conditions in the vicinity had sparked widespread concern, underscoring the importance of maintaining a clean environment.
The accumulation of sludge poses numerous health risks, including the transmission of infectious diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Airborne particles from dried sludge can lead to respiratory issues, while direct contact may result in skin irritation and allergy symptoms. Moreover, consuming water or food crops contaminated by sludge-amended soil can cause gastrointestinal disorders.
The presence of heavy metals like lead and mercury in sludge raises the risk of poisoning, while prolonged exposure to certain chemicals may increase the likelihood of cancer. Therefore, proper management and treatment of sludge are imperative to mitigate health hazards and safeguard both human health and the environment.
Notably, the Nairobi County Government derives over 40% of its revenue from this area, which boasts more than 50 malls and continues to attract investors, particularly from the Somali Diaspora, who are keen on real estate investment.
