In a recent development, the Isiolo Regional Office of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission brought charges against two police officers, David Irungu and Hassan Liban Hassan, stationed at Merti Sub-County in Isiolo. The charges included bribery and robbery with violence.

According to the allegations, the officers allegedly demanded a bribe of Kes. 50,000 from a suspect they had arrested on suspicion of involvement with the outlawed Al-Shabaab Association. This demand was made as a condition for releasing the suspect from detention.

In a further troubling accusation, it is claimed that while armed with a rifle, the officers conducted a search on the complainant and forcibly took an additional Kes. 57,000 from him.

Both accused officers pleaded not guilty to the charges of bribery and robbery with violence. They were subsequently granted release on bail, set at Kes. 300,000 in cash or Kes. 500,000 in surety bond.

The case is scheduled for a hearing on May 27, 2024.
