UK-based energy company Globeleq is gearing up to invest approximately Sh4.6 billion in the installation of a battery storage system for its Malindi solar plant. This initiative aims to address the challenge of supplying electricity during peak demand periods.
Having secured approval from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), Globeleq is moving forward with the implementation of the project.
The battery storage facility is expected to enhance the plant’s capacity, targeting a supply of up to 40 Megawatts-hour, particularly during evening peak hours when demand surges.
The Malindi solar plant, established with an investment of $69 million (equivalent to Sh7.83 billion), commenced operations in 2021, contributing power to the national grid. With a total investment of approximately Sh12.5 billion, the project underscores Globeleq’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions in Kenya.
Recognizing the critical importance of meeting peak electricity demand, especially during evening hours, Globeleq’s battery storage initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance energy infrastructure.
The company notes that this project is part of the UK-Kenya Strategic Partnership, reaffirmed during the United Nations Climate Change Conference in November 2022.
