A Kenya Power official in Diani, Kwale County, found himself in handcuffs on Thursday after being caught red-handed by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) soliciting a Sh100,000 bribe from a local resident in order to restore power supply to her premises.
Evans Otieno Ochieng, identified as a Debts Controller at Kenya Power’s Ukunda office, was nabbed by EACC sleuths shortly after receiving a partial payment of Sh70,000 from Godliver Anyango to reconnect her disconnected power meter.
According to reports, Ochieng demanded the bribe from Ms. Anyango on Tuesday, just after disconnecting her power supply the previous day.
“Investigations commenced upon receipt of allegations that Ochieng, the KPLC Kwale Debts Controller, based at Ukunda Office solicited a financial advantage of Ksh.100,000 as an inducement so as to reconnect the power he had disconnected on 18th October, 2021 due to accrued bills at Pine Grove Estate,” stated Eric Ngumbi, the EACC spokesperson.
