Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua revealed that he used to drink on average 36 bottles of beer per day during his teetolling days. The DP made the revelation during his ongoing crusade against alcohol abuse by sharing his personal battle with addiction.
During a public lecture at Murang’a University of Technology on Wednesday, Mr. Gachagua candidly discussed his struggles with heavy drinking and the toll it took on his life.
“I used to drink a lot myself, a crate… a crate and a half. There’s a bar called Citrus next to Jamuhuri High School. There would be a one-man guitar,” he revealed.
Reflecting on the consequences of his alcoholism, Gachagua lamented the loss of many friends to the bottle.
“A number of my drinking buddies have passed away, some are mere shadows of their former selves, and others have hit rock bottom, relying on me for sustenance,” he shared.
The Deputy President further emphasized the positive turn his life has taken since he made the decision to quit drinking.
“Since I made the choice to sober up, my journey has been marked by success, evident in where I stand today,” he declared.
“I implore our young people to listen to my plea. President William Ruto shares my concerns. I appeal to you, with the utmost respect and humility, to recognize the brightness of your future. Please, don’t jeopardize it,” he urged.
