Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has declared his intention to contest the presidency in the 2027 General Election, while pledging to support another opposition candidate if leaders agree on a different flag bearer to challenge President William Ruto.
Nyoro, who recently left the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and joined the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK), said his presidential ambitions would not stand in the way of efforts to unite the opposition.
Speaking to supporters, the legislator said he was ready to put his ideas and record before Kenyans and allow voters and opposition leaders to determine who should lead the country.
“If our mothers who are also seeking good leadership and want to push Kenya forward look at this young man from Kiharu and decide that he has worked hard and even schools in his constituency are almost free, will there be a problem with that?” he posed.
Nyoro said he would work with opposition figures regardless of their individual ambitions, arguing that leaders should focus on developing a common agenda instead of competing against one another.
“God has given us all different leadership abilities. I will put my ideas on the table and work with Justin Muturi, Rigathi Gachagua, Fred Matiang’i, Kalonzo Musyoka, Edwin Sifuna — all of us together,” he remarked to cheers from supporters.
Nyoro Calls for One Opposition Presidential Candidate
The Kiharu MP urged opposition leaders to agree on a single presidential candidate by August next year to avoid splitting the anti-government vote.
He said leaders should be willing to sacrifice their individual ambitions if that was necessary to create a stronger political coalition capable of challenging Ruto in 2027.
“I am asking all of us in the opposition, by August next year, let us have one flag bearer. Let us not have factions here and there. Let us all sit at the table and choose one leader who will run for president,” he said.
Nyoro also invited opposition leaders to attend his political meetings and address his supporters, saying such engagements could help build trust and reduce divisions within the opposition.
He similarly said he would seek opportunities to address supporters of other opposition leaders whenever he attended their gatherings.
Nyoro to Mobilise Opposition Across Kenya
Nyoro said his new political vehicle, the People’s Party of Kenya, would provide a platform for mobilising supporters across the country ahead of the 2027 elections.
He said he was prepared to return to regions where he previously campaigned for President Ruto ahead of the 2022 election and seek to persuade voters to support the opposition.
“We will go to Wajir, Mombasa and other parts of the country. Kwenye kwote tulienda kuprleka wheelbarrow, tutarudi kuzitoa rangi na kung’oa miguu,” he said.
The remarks signal a significant shift in Nyoro’s political positioning after years as one of the prominent figures associated with Ruto’s political camp.
Despite declaring his own presidential ambitions, Nyoro maintained that the broader objective should be to build a united opposition capable of defeating the Kenya Kwanza administration.
He said he would ultimately support whoever the opposition agrees to field as its presidential candidate, even if he is not the person selected.
