Former Migori Governor Okoth Obado has asked the High Court to consider a lenient sentence following his conviction over the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.
Obado made the plea through a pre-sentencing social inquiry report, citing his advancing age, health challenges and the lengthy period he has spent facing the criminal case.
Obado Cites Health Problems and Clean Record
According to the report, Obado told probation officers that he has no previous criminal record and asked the court to consider his medical condition when determining his sentence.
He cited hypertension and persistent shoulder pain among the health problems he currently experiences.
Obado also pointed to the prolonged duration of the trial, urging the court to show him mercy.
Despite the conviction, the former governor maintained that he was not involved in Sharon’s killing.
He acknowledged having had an intimate relationship with Sharon but said he disagreed with the court’s finding that he played a role in her death.
Former Governor Expresses Remorse
Obado said he respected the court’s verdict despite disagreeing with the finding of his involvement in the murder.
He also expressed remorse over Sharon’s death and indicated that he was willing to support her family and pursue reconciliation.
According to the report, Obado told probation officers that he had intended to take responsibility for Sharon’s pregnancy if DNA testing established that he was the father.
He further said he had instructed his aide, Michael Oyamo, to handle logistical matters relating to Sharon.
Sharon’s Family Supports Leniency
In a notable development, Sharon Otieno’s family reportedly told probation officers that they do not oppose a lenient sentence for Obado.
The family cited the former governor’s continued financial assistance and his efforts to reconcile with them.
They reportedly urged the court to give Obado an opportunity to fulfil commitments he had made to Sharon’s parents, saying the assistance would help ease their financial difficulties.
The High Court will consider the pre-sentencing report and other submissions before determining the sentence to be imposed on Obado.
