A man was sentenced to 15 years in prison by a Kisumu court on Friday for the rape of a 92-year-old woman in September of the previous year in Ofunyu village.

Senior Principal Magistrate Robert Owanda of Winam Law Courts delivered the verdict, citing compelling witness testimonies presented during the trial, which confirmed the guilt of the accused, Alex Okumu Ooyi, also known as Jagor.

The accused faced charges of rape and indecent assault, in violation of the Sexual Offenses Act. The court heard that on September 17, 2023, at 11pm, Ooyi forcefully entered the residence of Keziah Osir, the elderly victim, and raped her.

Magistrate Owanda highlighted that seven witnesses, including DNA analysis experts from the government chemist, provided testimony in the case. DNA tests conducted on blood-stained blankets found at the scene, as well as on the accused’s underwear, yielded a female DNA profile matching that of the victim, linking the accused to the crime.

During mitigation, the accused appealed for leniency, citing his status as a first-time offender. However, the court dismissed this plea, emphasizing the severity of the offense and the need for a strong deterrent.

The accused has a window of 14 days to file an appeal against the imprisonment.
