Chief Inspector Mike Mugo who made crime reporting captivating through his witty narrations of the work done by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has resigned.

Mugo tendered his resignation at the end of January after spending 15 years in public service, three of which were at the helm of the communications department at the DCI.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity I was accorded to serve my country.I urge the public to continue supporting not only the DCI but all security agencies in the country since security is everyone’s collective responsibility,” said Mugo about his exit.

He explained that his exit was prompted by a reintroduction of bureaucracies at the DCI which made his job difficult following the resignation of former DCI director George Kinoti.

“As I prepared his final brief moments before he left office, he expressed his fears to me that he did not think it would be business as usual at the communications unit after his departure,” said Mugo of how Kinoti had warned him that things would change at the DCI upon his exit.

“And his prophecy came to pass when, after his departure, I would attempt to provide solutions through examples that had worked before, only to be met with responses such as that I had hangovers from the Kinoti regime. At this point, I knew my time at DCI was up,” said Mugo.

Mugo’s stint as the Director of Communications at the DCI made the agency’s communication on social media win the hearts and minds of not only Kenya’s youthful population on social media but also the international community.

His social media and public relations team, which grew to 20 at the height of its popularity under former DCI George Kinoti transformed the DCI’s Twitter page into the most tiltillating account run by a public agency in Kenya.

In 2021, the Washington Post described the narration of stories posted by the DCI as Shakespearean.

“Kenyans from top to bottom have embraced Twitter as their source of information…What I’ve learned is that people want thrills. You must feed your followers. That’s how the word gets out,” Mugo told the Washington Post in 2021.
