Kenyan content creators are on the brink of monetizing their content as Facebook, under its parent company Meta, announced the introduction of instream ads, scheduled to roll out within the next three months.

The announcement was made at State House in the presence of President William Ruto, where Meta revealed plans to launch additional revenue channels across Facebook and Instagram. These channels will include Facebook Stories, Instagram subscriptions, and IG gifts.

Moon Baz, who oversees global partnerships for Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey, expressed excitement about the upcoming rollout of instream ads on Facebook, set to commence early this summer.

“Instream ads are image and video ads that will be served before, during, or after your videos, providing content creators with an opportunity to monetize and generate revenue through Facebook,” Baz explained.

Former British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, now serving as the President of Global Affairs at Meta, highlighted the significance of the rollout for Kenyan content creators. He emphasized that creators producing content in English and Kiswahili will now have the opportunity to earn income from their videos on the platform.

Clegg acknowledged President Ruto’s advocacy for Kenyan creators, expressing gratitude for his efforts in pushing Meta to take action.

To be eligible for monetization, creators must meet certain criteria, including having at least 5,000 followers, being over 18 years old, having at least five active videos on their Facebook pages, and accumulating 60,000 minutes of video views in the past 60 days, including live videos.
