Nairobi — The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has unveiled a month-long programme to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of its founder, Raila Amolo Odinga, who died on October 15, 2025, aged 80.

Raila died while receiving medical treatment in India, marking the end of a decades-long political career that saw him play a prominent role in Kenya’s democratic struggle and Pan-African affairs.

In a statement, ODM designated October 2026 as “Mwezi wa Baba”, with activities planned across the country to celebrate Raila’s life, legacy and contribution to Kenya.

Candle-lighting ceremony to launch celebrations

The programme will officially begin on October 2 with a nationwide candle-lighting ceremony scheduled for 6pm.

ODM will then hold a major memorial rally in Kakamega Town on October 9, bringing together party supporters and Raila’s admirers to honour his legacy.

Family-led activities will follow from October 10 to October 15, culminating in a memorial service at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo on the first anniversary of his death.

Memorial rallies planned across Kenya

The party has also scheduled additional memorial activities in different parts of the country.

A memorial rally will be held in Garissa on October 17, while Nairobi will host another major rally on October 31.

Other activities will take place in the Coastal region, Kajiado and Turkana counties as ODM seeks to bring together Kenyans to remember Raila’s contribution to the country.

The month-long programme is expected to highlight Raila’s political journey, his role in Kenya’s democracy and his contribution to Pan-Africanism, while giving supporters an opportunity to reflect on his legacy.
