Traffic along the Thika superhighway faced disruption on Wednesday as Githurai 45 residents staged demonstrations along the busy highway.
The residents, while protesting, blocked the highway with rocks, halting the movement of vehicles and forcing motorists to seek alternative routes. They expressed frustration over the government’s failure to address the flooding caused by heavy rains.
In videos circulated widely, the residents could be seen confronting police officers who attempted to control the situation. As the clash unfolded, stranded motorists left their vehicles to witness the confrontation.
Police used tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters who approached them aggressively. Passengers were left stranded in vehicles and had to walk to their destinations as the situation escalated.
These protests occurred amid ongoing heavy rains in Nairobi, resulting in flooding in various parts of the city and disrupting transportation. Many motorists reported difficulties reaching their destinations due to the adverse weather conditions.
