Former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko recently revealed a personal aspect of his life, sharing that he had been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder in the past. Sonko disclosed this information during a visit to Mathare Hospital, where he went to check on the recovery progress of journalists Kimani Mbugua and Eunice Omollo.
Accompanied by comedian Oga Obbina and Kimani Mbugua’s family, Sonko expressed empathy for those grappling with mental health challenges, citing his own experience with Bipolar disorder. He disclosed that Bipolar disorder seemed to run in his family, mentioning that one of his daughters had also received the same diagnosis. Stressing the importance of seeking treatment, Sonko emphasized that both he and his daughter had received medical attention and regular checkups for their condition.
During their visit to Mathare Hospital, Sonko and the group received updates from the medical team regarding Kimani and Eunice’s progress. While Eunice was undergoing treatment at the female ward, Sonko had the opportunity to interact with Kimani, reminiscing about past interviews and engaging in meaningful discussions about his current struggles.
Impressed by the quality of care provided by the hospital, Sonko expressed gratitude for the professionalism and dedication of the medical staff. He mentioned plans to transfer Kimani and Eunice to a rehabilitation center in Mombasa, highlighting the potential benefits of a change in environment for their recovery.
Sonko underscored his commitment to supporting individuals facing mental health challenges, emphasizing that his disclosure about Bipolar disorder was intended to raise awareness rather than for personal gain. He cited his ongoing involvement in caring for a child injured in a past terror attack as evidence of his dedication to helping those in need.
