Police in Voi, Taita Taveta County, have intercepted 318 kilograms of bhang with an estimated street value of Sh9.8 million. The operation, which took place on Wednesday in the Ikanga area, led to the arrest of a suspect.
Acting on a tip-off from members of the public, police discovered the drugs in a vehicle fitted with fake number plates. Taita Taveta County police boss William Sadiq reported that the Mombasa-bound vehicle was transporting 11 sacks, each containing 90 kilograms of the narcotic substance.
This significant arrest follows closely on the heels of another drug bust. Barely seven days prior, two suspected drug peddlers were apprehended in Busia. DCI detectives seized three bales of bhang during the operation.
DCI boss Mohamed Amin revealed in a statement on X that the narcotics were found stashed in backpacks, believed to be destined for Nairobi. The operation was carried out by officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) based in Busia.
The two male suspects, aged 26 and 29, were arrested after information was received from the public. According to Amin, informants had spotted the suspects at the busy Busia bus station, preparing to board a Nairobi-bound bus with suspicious luggage.
“Anti-narcotics officers responded swiftly and managed to arrest the two, and upon thorough search discovered the 12 kilograms of cannabis sativa with an approximate street value of Sh360,000. Legal processes have been initiated against the duo,” Amin stated.
