Controversial car dealer Khalif Kairo was arrested on Tuesday over fresh allegations of fraud. He is accused of receiving full payment for a BMW but failing to deliver the vehicle.
Kairo was apprehended at the Milimani Law Courts shortly after attending the mention of three other ongoing fraud cases related to similar car deals. He is set to be arraigned in court on Wednesday, March 26.
This is the latest in a string of legal troubles for the businessman. In January 2025, Kairo was granted a personal bond of Sh3 million after spending multiple days in police custody. His lawyer, Davinson Makau, had argued before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina that Kairo was unable to raise the cash bail and requested a personal bond instead.
During the hearing, the court also returned Kairo’s passport to allow him to travel to the USA for fundraising purposes, citing his consistent travel history and finding no compelling reason to restrict his movement.
On January 29, 2025, Kairo was charged with obtaining Sh3,045,000 from Dan Odhiambo Odundo by falsely claiming he could import a Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4 from Japan through his company, Kai & Karo Limited. He pleaded not guilty before Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi.
In another instance, Kairo is accused of receiving Sh2,145,150 from Jeff Kyule Munane between July 10 and July 29, 2024, under the pretense of importing a Honda Vezel Hybrid from Japan.
Additionally, he allegedly obtained Sh2.9 million from Dona Ayalo Okoth in July 2024, promising to import a Subaru Outback, which was also never delivered.
