Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has been released from police custody at Eldama Ravine Police Station, with no charges filed against him.
Malala had been arrested on Wednesday at Kirobon Girls High School in Nakuru, where he had arrived for rehearsals with the Butere Girls High School drama team, ahead of the National Drama Festivals. His controversial play, Echoes of War, has sparked national attention due to its political themes and bold critique of governance and social justice in Kenya.
According to Malala, he reached Kirobon at around 5:30 p.m., only to find the school heavily guarded and his vehicle blocked by police.
Following his release, Malala addressed the press and praised the Butere Girls students, who on Thursday refused to perform the play in protest of his arrest and the censorship surrounding their work.
“Those girls are the heroines of this nation. They should be celebrated, and their names should be inscribed in the history of this country,” Malala declared.
