The Raila Odinga is set to be honoured with a monument in Nairobi after the Nairobi County Assembly approved an amendment authorising its construction at the Supreme Court roundabout.
The proposal was sponsored by John Rex Omolleh, who revised an earlier motion that had recommended the monument be erected at Uhuru Park. Following debate and approval by the Assembly, the monument will instead be built at the Supreme Court roundabout in Nairobi.
According to the motion, the monument is intended to recognise Odinga’s role in Kenya’s governance, democratic reforms, promotion of the rule of law, and contributions to national infrastructure development.
Supporters of the proposal argue that Odinga has played a significant role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape over several decades, including his involvement in the push for multiparty democracy and constitutional reforms.
The Assembly’s approval clears the way for the project to proceed, although details regarding the monument’s design, cost, construction timeline, and funding arrangements are yet to be made public.
The decision is expected to spark debate among Kenyans, with supporters viewing it as a fitting tribute to one of the country’s most influential political figures, while critics may question the timing and priorities surrounding the project.
