Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has officially declared his intention to contest the presidency in the 2027 General Election, joining a growing list of aspirants eyeing Kenya’s top seat.

In a statement released on Monday morning, the youthful MP said the decision followed “deep reflection, wide consultations, and careful consideration” of the country’s current state.

“Fellow Kenyans, after deep reflection, wide consultations, and careful consideration of the state of our nation, I, Peter Kalerwa Salasya, the Member of Parliament for Mumias East Constituency, hereby declare my intention to vie for the Presidency of the Republic of Kenya in the 2027 General Election,” he announced.

Salasya said his decision was driven by a “profound desire to offer bold, transformative leadership that will reposition our great nation for industrial growth, economic empowerment, and social justice.”

During an interview at Kenyans.co.ke studios on Monday, February 3, 2025, Salasya outlined key elements of his agenda, which include ending Kenya’s reliance on labour and talent exports by focusing instead on creating domestic employment opportunities.

He emphasized Kenya’s capacity for manufacturing, innovation, and industrialisation as pathways to sustainable job creation and national prosperity.

To champion his vision, Salasya revealed plans to launch a new political party later in the year.

“This movement will embody the dreams and aspirations of a new Kenya — a Kenya where opportunity is not a privilege for the few but a right for all,” he said.

“I invite all Kenyans — especially the youth, the women, the workers, the entrepreneurs, and the dreamers — to join me on this journey toward a new dawn for our beloved country. Together, we can and we shall build a prosperous, inclusive, and united Kenya.”

Salasya’s presidential bid adds to an increasingly crowded race. Other prominent figures who have declared their intentions include Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, Rigathi Gachagua, and Fred Matiang’i.
