Six suspects have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Reverend Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett in Kabartile Village, Baringo County, the National Police Service has confirmed.

The tragic incident took place in Mokoro Location, Kakiptul Sub-Location, where Father Bett, a priest at St Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish, was ambushed and killed by armed assailants. According to Elgeyo Marakwet Police Commander Peter Mulinge, the priest had parked his vehicle along the Chesongoch-Tot-Liter road and was walking to the venue of his afternoon sermon when the attackers struck.

“But the assailants, who had laid an ambush, shot and killed the St Mulumba Catholic Church cleric on the spot,” said Mulinge.

General Service Unit (GSU) officers swiftly responded to the scene and arrested six suspects, who are now in police custody.

Police have ruled out the common regional issues of cattle rustling or banditry as motives for the attack. “This was a targeted attack that has nothing to do with local security operations,” said National Police Service spokesperson Muchiki Nyaga.

Nyaga added that investigations are ongoing as authorities work to identify and apprehend any additional individuals involved in the attack.
