Nairobi, Kenya – Wednesday, July 24, 2025 –
Security agencies have launched a manhunt for a robbery with violence suspect who dramatically escaped custody at Kibera Law Courts in Nairobi.
Alex Kibisu Escapes While in Handcuffs
The suspect, Alex Kibisu, 29, was in remand at Kamiti Maximum Prison and had been brought to court for a defence hearing in a 2023 robbery with violence case. However, on Wednesday afternoon, as he was being escorted from courtroom number three, Kibisu managed to slip past guards and escape.
“He jumped over the court’s perimeter wall and disappeared into the slum,” a police source confirmed.
Witnesses say the escape took place while he was still handcuffed, raising questions about security protocol at one of Nairobi’s busiest courts.
Escaped Into Kibera Slums
Police believe Kibisu vanished into the dense and highly populated Kibera slum, making the search more difficult. Officers immediately launched a pursuit operation, but the suspect managed to evade capture.
Kibisu is said to have previously resided in Satellite, Nairobi, but hails from Kakamega County. Authorities have since alerted law enforcement agencies across Nairobi and Western Kenya to aid in tracking him down.

Police Urge Public to Report
Nairobi Police Commander George Seda urged members of the public to report any sightings of the suspect.
“If anyone has seen Alex Kibisu or has information, please report to the nearest police station or call 999,” said Seda.
The case has sparked debate on courtroom security in Kenya, especially regarding dangerous suspects who pose threats to public safety.
Background of the Case
Kibisu was facing charges related to a 2023 violent robbery case and had been in remand at Kamiti Maximum Prison, one of the most secure detention facilities in Kenya. His case was at the defence hearing stage, a critical part of the trial.
