A sombre mood has engulfed Sega town, Siaya County, after a couple was tragically electrocuted in their home late on Monday night.
The victims, identified as Meshack Ongulo and his wife Modesta Mwakali, were both teachers in the area. According to reports, the tragedy occurred after they came into contact with a live electrical cable near their bathroom.
How the Tragedy Happened
North Ugenya Location Chief George Francis Osoro said that Modesta had entered the bathroom when she was suddenly electrocuted. Her husband, who was brushing his teeth nearby, rushed to help her but was also fatally struck.
Neighbors rushed to the scene after hearing distress screams but unfortunately found the couple lifeless inside their compound. Police later moved the bodies to a private morgue in Sega town for postmortem.
Authorities Call for Electrical Safety
Chief Osoro urged calm among residents and emphasized the importance of electrical safety in residential areas. He appealed to landlords and property owners to ensure proper wiring installation and regular maintenance to prevent similar tragedies.
“This unfortunate incident is a wake-up call for all of us. Electrical installations must be handled by qualified professionals to save lives,” Chief Osoro said.
Growing Concern Over Electrical Accidents
Cases of electrocution in Kenya have been on the rise in recent years, with experts urging both homeowners and contractors to adhere to safety standards outlined by Kenya Power and the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
