Nairobi, Wednesday, September 17, 2025 — Githurai Ward MCA Deonysias Mwangi Waithira has resigned from the Nairobi County Assembly, deepening his fallout with Governor Johnson Sakaja.

Waithira confirmed his resignation in an interview with Kenyans.co.ke. He had earlier sent a formal letter to the Speaker of the County Assembly. The MCA, elected on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, said he quit because the County Executive had failed to deliver projects and services.

“I, Hon. Deonysias Mwangi Waithira, hereby tender my resignation from the elective position of Member of the Third Nairobi City County Assembly representing Githurai Ward,” his letter read.

The resignation will take effect on Monday, November 1, 2025. Waithira was elected under Gazette Notice No. 9956 of August 24, 2022.

Blames County Government for Neglect

Waithira thanked the UDA party and Githurai residents for trusting him but said he could not continue serving under current conditions.

He accused the Nairobi County government of abandoning Githurai Ward, despite his advocacy in the Assembly. He added that the County Executive ignored resolutions and delayed critical projects.

The MCA also cited inefficiencies within the Assembly. He said the Ward Office Imprest had been delayed, crippling his office operations.

“These are not personal complaints but the voices of the people of Githurai,” Waithira wrote. He said residents raised concerns during forums for the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP), Annual Development Plans (ADPs), and County Fiscal Strategy Papers (CFSPs).

Legal Basis for Resignation

The law allows an MCA to resign. Under Article 194(1)(d) of the Constitution of Kenya (2010), an MCA’s seat falls vacant if the member resigns in writing to the Speaker.

(See the full provision on Kenya Law).

Nairobi Politics in Turmoil

The resignation comes weeks after MCAs attempted to impeach Governor Sakaja. They accused him of failing to honour campaign pledges, delaying bursaries, and stalling the Ward Development Fund.

Governor Sakaja has insisted that his administration remains focused on service delivery. But many ward representatives say his government has sidelined their communities.
