Members of the Nairobi County Assembly (MCAs) have threatened to impeach Governor Johnson Sakaja, sparking fresh political drama at City Hall.
The MCAs convened early Tuesday morning in an informal sitting, popularly referred to as a “speaker’s Kamkunji,” chaired by Speaker Ken Ng’ondi. While the details remain unclear, insiders confirmed that the governor’s impeachment was among the hot topics discussed.
Plans Still at Consultation Stage
Majority Whip Moses Ogeto (Kilimani Ward) revealed that although the discussion touched on impeachment, the process remains at an early stage.
“Any member is free to draft a motion and seek signatures to impeach the governor,” Ogeto said, noting that nearly 100 MCAs attended the session. However, he declined to disclose the grievances fueling the move.
Speaker Ng’ondi reiterated that while the issue was raised, due process must be followed.
“You cannot stop any member from speaking in such a forum. Someone can even shout, ‘Speaker Must Go.’ However, when it comes to impeachment, there are procedures to be followed,” he explained.
Retreat to Strategize Motion
South B MCA Waithera Chege confirmed that members plan to retreat next week to harmonize and strategize on the motion to oust Governor Sakaja.
Critics, however, remain skeptical, pointing out that the assembly is currently on recess, raising doubts about how quickly the impeachment motion could be executed.
What It Means for Nairobi Politics
If the motion materializes, this would not be the first time a Kenyan governor faces impeachment proceedings. Past attempts, including those targeting former Nairobi governors like Mike Sonko.
