Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has officially declared his intention to vie for the presidency in the 2027 general elections, boldly stating that he is the only opposition candidate capable of unseating President William Ruto.
Speaking during a tour of the Mt Kenya region on Saturday, Gachagua said his decision was driven by overwhelming calls from Kenyans to take up the mantle of leadership.
“I have come home to say that I have accepted to vie for the presidency of the Republic of Kenya. Kenyans have looked and said the only leader who has the ability to remove Ruto from office is Riggy G, and I have come home to seek your blessings,” he told supporters.
Opposition unity still uncertain
Gachagua’s announcement comes at a time when opposition parties are still in discussions on whether to field a single candidate to challenge Ruto in 2027. Political analysts say his entry into the race could complicate coalition negotiations but also energize the Mt Kenya voting bloc.
Gachagua’s campaign promises
While addressing roadside rallies, Gachagua, flanked by leaders allied to his Democratic Change Party (DCP), outlined some of his key priorities should he succeed in his bid.
“The first thing I will do if elected president is to ensure that our children truly access free education, as was introduced by the late President Mwai Kibaki,” he said.
He further emphasized that his administration would prioritize equity, economic reforms, and safeguarding the welfare of ordinary citizens.
