Police in Mombasa have launched investigations after a suspect collapsed and died shortly after being arrested and taken to the Mombasa Central Police Station.

The deceased, identified as Simon Warui, 35, had been arrested on Wednesday, September 17, by officers from the Urban Division following a complaint of stealing by a servant.

Collapsed Inside Police Station Toilet

Witnesses at the station reported that Warui appeared weak and worried upon arrival. Moments later, he asked to use the toilet facilities within the cells.

According to police, officers heard a loud bang soon after he entered the toilet. They rushed to the scene and found him lying on the floor with blood oozing from his nose.

An alarm was raised and Warui was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

Police Launch Probe

His body was transferred to the local mortuary pending a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death. Detectives have since opened investigations into the incident.

The case has raised questions around detainee safety and conditions within police stations, an issue that has come under public scrutiny in Kenya in recent years.
